On the other hand, felonies are crimes that are punishable by state prison or state jail. Having a felony conviction on your criminal record can also result in the loss of certain rights, such as the right to carry a firearm for at least five years and the right to vote.
The following are the four types of felony classes in TX:
- Capital felony – Considered the most serious felony, a conviction carries either life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
- First-degree felony – Getting convicted of this type of felony is punishable by life imprisonment or a prison term of up to 99 years, as well as a maximum fine of $10,000.
- Second-degree felony – A conviction can lead to imprisonment for up to 20 years and a maximum fine of $10,000.
- Third-degree felonies – Getting convicted carries a maximum prison term of 10 years and a fine of up to $10,000.
- State jail felonies – This type of felony can either be punishable by a state jail sentence of up to two years and a maximum fine of $10,000.
